There’s something magical about watching a toddler discover their role as big sister during a newborn session. This sweet 2-year-old arrived clinging to mom’s leg, unsure about this whole new situation. But within minutes of noticing the toys I keep in the studio, her curiosity took over.
I never ask toddlers to “smile and look at the camera” – instead, we play games. “Can you show baby where their tiny nose is?” or “Let’s see if baby has little toes like you!” These simple prompts create the most genuine interactions because they feel like play, not posing.
And when all else fails? Mini marshmallows strategically placed around baby work like magic. She was hunting for “treasures” while naturally leaning in toward her new sibling. In the photos, you’d never know the marshmallows were there – you just see a sweet moment of connection.
By the end of our session, this initially shy little girl was giggling and naturally engaging with her baby brother. Her parents were so happy to see their daughter’s beautiful personality captured so authentically.
Some of my favorite moments happen when we stop trying to force connection and simply create space for it to unfold naturally. Every toddler is different, and that’s exactly what makes these sessions so special.
A few favorites from this sweet family session – enjoy!
