Pregnancy is a beautiful, life-changing experience, yet so many moms-to-be shy away from scheduling a maternity photo session. Why? Often, it’s because of misconceptions or myths that leave them unsure if maternity photography is the right fit. These myths about maternity photography can prevent expecting mothers from capturing this incredible time in their lives. Let’s bust some of the most common myths about maternity photography so you can see why it’s a session you’ll treasure forever.

  • Myths about Maternity Photography Debunked

Myth #1: You Have to Be a Model to Look Good in Maternity Photos

Reality: Maternity photography celebrates the beauty of your pregnancy journey, and you don’t need any modeling experience to look incredible.

A skilled maternity photographer knows how to pose and light you in ways that highlight your natural glow and flatter every shape and size. Whether it’s showcasing your baby bump or capturing tender moments with your partner, maternity sessions are about creating memories—not fitting into unrealistic standards.

Myth #2: It’s Only for First-Time Moms

Reality: Every pregnancy is worth celebrating, whether it’s your first baby or your fifth.

Each pregnancy is unique, and many moms cherish having photos from each one. Maternity photography isn’t about the number of kids you have—it’s about honoring this special time in your life. Plus, siblings can often be included in the session, making the photos even more meaningful.

Myth #3: It’s Too Expensive

Reality: Maternity photography is a valuable investment, but there are options to fit many budgets.

Many photographers, including myself, offer packages with a variety of price points. Think of these photos as heirlooms—something you’ll look back on for decades and cherish forever.

Ask your photographer about session options, digital image collections, or payment plans if cost is a concern. Trust me: The memories you’ll capture are well worth it.

Myth #4: You Need a Perfect Nursery or Fancy Location

Reality: This is one of my favorite myths about Maternity Photography. Maternity sessions can be beautiful anywhere—from a cozy corner of your home to a scenic outdoor spot.

A great photographer can work magic in almost any setting. In Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, we’re lucky to have stunning parks, charming urban areas, and even my studio, which offers a comfortable, private space. Wherever you feel most at ease is the perfect location for your maternity shoot.

Myth #5: You Need to Be Near Your Due Date

Reality: Maternity sessions are typically best scheduled between 28–34 weeks of pregnancy.

At this stage, your baby bump is beautifully rounded, but you’re still comfortable enough to enjoy the session. Waiting too close to your due date can make the session feel rushed or uncomfortable, so plan ahead to get the most out of the experience.

Scheduling a maternity photoshoot can also help you get some “me time” which is highly recommended before baby arrives.
