‘ What should I wear to a newborn photo session?’ I am asked this question a lot, which is good because clothing can make a big impact on a photograph. It really boils down to color, comfort, and material.
Let’s start with the easy one. You don’t need to worry about bringing any clothing or accessories for your baby’s photoshoot. As a natural photographer, I lightly swaddle baby in a light colored wrap to keep them warm and comfy. Your little will most likely be swaddled for the whole session.
You are more than welcome to bring any special items or outfits that hold sentimental value or personal significance, otherwise, there’s no need for you to bring any additional clothing or accessories.
Let’s move on to you – mom! One of the ways to make newborn photo sessions a luxury experience is my ever-growing client closet. In it, you’ll find a variety of simple to luxe options – perfect for new moms! These gowns have comfort and style in mind.
Let’s face it – most Dads are not thrilled about the idea of getting their pictures taken. So let’s make it easy on them too. Most men have khakis and a white shirt they can dig out of the closet and will save them from the shopping trip. If that’s not your husband’s style than I suggest soft, neutral colors – grays, tans, whites with little to no pattern or logos.
When it comes to choosing outfits for baby’s siblings, the most important factor to consider is that they are comfortable. As with Dad’s outfit stick with neutral colors or muted pastels. The goal is to coordinate, but not be matchy-matchy. For example, your child could wear tan pants with a light grey shirt or a soft white or light pink dress. Choose soft, flowy fabrics like cotton or linen and avoid bold patterns and logos as these can be distracting to the eye and take away from the purpose of a photograph. I love Reverie Threads for baby and toddler clothing.
